New approach for the building stock in Spain: from «efficiency first» to «decarbonization first»

Luis Quiroga, president and co-founder of OIKOS, proposes placing decarbonization at the center of policy for the building sector, replacing fossil-fuel boilers with electrified technologies, promoting heating networks, and adjusting energy taxation.
These proposals are gathered in the report Descarbonización de edificios, which analyzes how to carry them out and identifies economic, technical, and social barriers, as well as solutions to overcome them. According to this study, its application would allow decarbonizing up to 4 million homes and avoiding 3.9 million tons of CO₂ equivalent annually.
