Margaret Thatcher's speech on environmental protection

On November 8, 1989, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher delivered a speech to the United Nations General Assembly focusing on the threat to the global environment. She highlighted that, while climate changes in the past were natural, current human activities are altering the planet in damaging and dangerous ways. She referred to the massive increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the destruction of tropical forests, and damage to the ozone layer from substances such as CFCs. Thatcher emphasized the need for coordinated international action, based on sound scientific assessments, to address these environmental challenges.
