In the early 2000s, McCain co-sponsored the Climate Stewardship Act with Senator Joe Lieberman, a bipartisan proposal to implement a nationwide emissions trading system. Although the legislation was not passed, it marked a milestone by bringing the climate debate to the Senate from a conservative perspective. McCain also held hearings to educate Congress on climate change science. However, over time, he distanced himself from the issue due to internal political pressures and electoral challenges. Despite this, his legacy persists as an example of bipartisan leadership in the fight against climate change.
