Valentina Martínez, Director of OIKOS, participated in the Intereconomía channel to present the main conclusions of the report “Water in Spain”. In her speech, she warned about the growing scarcity of water resources in the country, which threatens both urban supply and the future of irrigation, key to the national agricultural economy. She denounced the structural investment deficit — estimated at 3 billion euros per year — and the high loss of water in distribution networks, which reaches 25% of the total supplied.
Faced with this diagnosis, Martínez defended the need for a coordinated and sustained water policy over time. Among the highlighted proposals are the creation of a National Water Authority, a National Fund to mobilize public and private investment, and a reform of the tariff system to promote efficiency and guarantee cost recovery. The report also advocates for a greater commitment to desalination, wastewater reuse, and the digitalization of networks, as pillars for a water transition that anticipates the effects of climate change.
