Decarbonising buildings: a climate and energy security challenge, but feasible?

Decarbonising buildings is key to the energy transition in Spain, where the sector emits more than the power sector. Replacing gas boilers with heat pumps and energy retrofitting can reduce consumption by up to 70%. However, the current pace of retrofitting is insufficient, with high costs and barriers in multi-family buildings. OIKOS proposes prioritizing homes where investment is cost-effective, facilitating financing through energy savings. This would allow decarbonising up to four million homes, boosting the sector and improving energy security.
