Merca2: Improving efficiency instead of reducing demand is key to decarbonising housing

The report by think tank Oikos suggests that, to decarbonise Spain's housing stock, it is more effective to focus on improving the energy efficiency of the most inefficient homes rather than simply reducing demand. It is estimated that this strategy could decarbonise up to four million homes, avoiding the emission of 3.9 million tonnes of CO₂ annually. Of these, 2.4 million could benefit from insulation improvements, 1.2 million through the adoption of aerothermal systems, and around 300,000 through the implementation of district heating networks. This approach prioritizes intensive users, whose homes consume more energy, allowing consumption savings to offset efficiency investments and reducing the need for public subsidies. Given that the building sector represents 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in Spain, this strategy would significantly contribute to the energy transition, improving energy security and the trade balance by decreasing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
