Presentation of the report "Water in Spain: Comprehensive diagnosis of an urgent and shared challenge"

On Thursday, April 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., OIKOS held the presentation of its new report "Water in Spain: Comprehensive diagnosis of an urgent and shared challenge" at the Ateneo de Madrid. The event featured Toni Timoner Salvá, co-founder of OIKOS and co-author of the report, who presented the main findings of the study: a critical snapshot of the national water situation, marked by tariff dysfunctions, lack of investment, inefficient use, and fragmented governance, in a context of growing water scarcity aggravated by climate change.
Following the presentation, a panel discussion took place with renowned experts in the fields of water, energy, and the agri-food sector: Isabel García Tejerina (senior advisor at EY and former Minister of Agriculture and Environment), Sofía Tirado (researcher in energy and climate at the Elcano Royal Institute), Jorge Fraile (head of climate risks and agricultural insurance at COAG), and Belén Gutiérrez (member of the Board of Directors of AEDyR). The dialogue addressed the necessary strategies for a structural reform of the water cycle in Spain, including comprehensive digitalization of its management, coordinated governance, the promotion of desalination powered by renewables, water reuse, and a major national pact to ensure its sustainability and strategic security.
A rigorous and collaborative diagnosis on the future of water in Spain, proposing urgent reforms to guarantee its sustainability and strategic value.
